Former policemen Jovan Kusic and Branislav Vukovic were charged with illegally detaining, abusing and torturing Bosniak civilians in the town of Pale in 1992.

The Bosnian state prosecution on Friday indicted Jovan Kusic, alias Joja, and Branislav Vukovic, alias Bato, for having participated in the unlawful detention, torture, abuse and beating of Bosniak civilians who were detained in a gym at the Cultural Centre in Pale in May and June 1992.

“Shortly thereafter, three detainees died of the consequences of the torture, abuse and beating, while several detainees sustained severe physical and mental injuries from which they recovered over a long period of time. They still have scars and consequences ,” the prosecution said in a statement.

Kusic and Vukovic were charged, in their capacity as employees of the police Public Security Station in Pale, with committing a crime against humanity.

According to the prosecution, Kusic lives in Serbia and Vukovic in Canada.

The indictment has been filed to the state court for confirmation.
