Local Justice – Tuzla: Indictment for Smoluca Crimes Confirmed

The Cantonal Court in Tuzla confirms an indictment against Milorad Cvijanovic, known as Micko, Milorad Cvijanovic, Svetomir Ilic and Vaso Ilic, charging them with crimes against prisoners of war in Smoluca village, Lukavac municipality.

The indictment alleges that the four indictees, former members of the Territorial Defence and then the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, committed crimes against Bosniak prisoners of war in June and July 1992.

According to the charges, from June 25 to July 29, 1992 the indictees treated several captured members of the Territorial Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina in an inhumane manner in Smoluca village. They allegedly locked and beat them up, caused severe bodily injuries to them and undermined their health, causing severe pain and suffering of those people.

The indictment alleges that, while beating the prisoners of war, the indictees used their hands and legs, as well as batons, knifes, other pieces of cold weapons and rifle butts.

In addition, they are charged with having failed to give food to the prisoners and invited civilians and other soldiers to come and enabled them to beat the prisoners.

Milorad ‘Micko’ Cvijanovic and Svetomir Ilic are charged under two counts each, while Milorad Cvijanovic and Vaso Ilic are covered with one count each.

The four indictees are due to enter their pleas in the upcoming period.
