Wartime rape survivors from Bosnia and Herzegovina say they are ready to help victims of sexual violence in the conflict in Ukraine by sharing their experiences of issues like coping with trauma, undergoing treatment and seeking justice.

Borislav Gligorevic, a former Territorial Defence fighter and Bosnian Serb Army soldier who is suspected of raping two Bosniak women prisoners in Liplje in 1992, was arrested at a border crossing with Serbia.

Bosnia’s state court confirmed the indictment of five former guards at the Trnopolje, Keraterm and Omarska wartime detention camps on charges that include torture, murder and allowing the rape of inmates.

In a retrial for wartime rape of a Bosniak woman who was held prisoner at a school in Kalinovik in south-eastern Bosnia, in 1992, a Belgrade court sentenced Dalibor Krstovic to nine years’ prison.

The Serbian judiciary has taken over the prosecution of Milorad Kotur, who is accused of involvement in killing over 50 Bosniaks and Croats, and Lazar Mutlak, who is charged with raping and sexually abusing a Bosniak woman.

The Bosnian prosecution charged 15 former guards with crimes against civilians and prisoners of war who were detained at the Military-Investigative Prison in Banja Luka, known as Mali Logor, from 1992 to 1995.

In 2022, the Bosnian prosecution charged 60 people with war crimes, although ten of them are outside the country so can’t be brought to trial – a problem that the new chief prosecutor has promised to tackle.

Former soldier Radovan Veljovic was sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a women during a “widespread and systematic” attack by Bosnian Serb forces in the Foca area in 1992.

Former Bosnian Army soldier Senad Salkic was convicted of raping three women during the conflict with the separatist forces of the self-proclaimed Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia in the Velika Kladusa municipality.
