Five Former ABiH Members Plead not Guilty

Husein Begic, Safet Kovacevic, Muhamed Anadolac , Abid Ljubijankic and Sabahudin Hafuric, former members of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ARBiH, appear before the Cantonal Court in Bihac and plead not guilty to the charges for war crimes in Bihac.

Begic, former Commander of the Military Police Squad with the Fifth Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ABiH, Kovacevic, Anadolac, Ljubijankic and Hafuric, former military policemen, are charged with having beaten and mentally mistreated 31 prisoners of war, former members of the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, while escorting them from Cazin to Izacic border crossing in Bihac in order to exchange them.

The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina originally filed the indictment against the five former members of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but considering the gravity of the crime, perpetrators’ functions and other criteria for determining the complexity of cases, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina referred the case to judicial institutions in Bihac for further processing.

The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina rendered the decision concerning the transfer of the case at a proposal by the Defence of Husein Begic.

Kovacevic has been held in custody since his arrest on October 25, 2012. The remaining four indictees were arrested on February 12 this year, when prohibiting measures were ordered against them.

According to the current laws, the trial of the indictees is due to begin within the next 60 days.
