Nirha Efendic was only 16 years old when she last saw her father and brother before heading with her mother to seek safety at the UN base in Potocari in July 1995. She told Detektor the story of what it was like growing up during the war and showed us photos from the war in which her family was together for the last time. These photos were found by the Srebrenica Memorial Centre and the University of Amsterdam while working on the ‘Facing Srebrenica’ project. So far, they have collected 12,000 photos from Dutch soldiers who were in Srebrenica, aiming to preserve a culture of remembrance of the siege and genocide in the city. For some families, these are also the only mementoes of their loved ones.
