Testifying at the trial before the District Court in Bijeljina, Defence witness Mustafa Mujkanovic says that indictee Nezir Merdzic was a member of a village guard in Hrnjcici village, Bratunac municipality, in 1992, but he does not know whether he participated in military operations.

Mujkanovic said that indictee Merdzic came to Hrnjcici with his family following an attack by Serb forces on Glogova village, Bratunac municipality, in May 1992.

“They stayed for about two months. Some time in autumn Nezir’s father asked if they could move to our place. They moved in and stayed until the fall of Konjevic Polje. In that period he was member of the village guard, just like everybody else,” Mujkanovic said.

The witness said that he saw Merdzic only a couple of times after the attack on Glogova and that he did not know whether he participated in any operations.

“I saw him a couple of times, when he came in order to ask for food for his family, but that was normal. Many of them used to come at night only in order to check whether their families were OK. They would be gone in the morning. As far as I know, they spent most of the time keeping watch in the vicinity of the village or searching for food,” Mujkanovic said.

The indictment charges Merdzic, who was allegedly accompanied by about ten other members of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with having shot at a vehicle from an ambush on the road between Bratunac and Konjevic Polje in Glogova village in June 1992. On that occasion three Serb civilians, who were in the car, were killed.

At this hearing Merdzic’s Defence examined witness Saban Tabak as well. Tabak said that Samir Avdic and his father Abid were exchanged and brought to Visoko on May 18, 1992, where he spent the next month under the protection by the Visoko Red Cross.

The Bijeljina District Prosecution intended to invite Avdic as a witness at Merdzic’s trial, but it has still not done that, because it does not have his address.

The trial is due to continue on March 12.
