Changing the first instance sentence to four years of prison, the Appeals Court found Karan-Ilic guilty on four counts, while it acquitted her from two counts of the first instance verdict.

According to the verdict, Karan-Ilic was found guilty of participating in torture, inhumane treatment and infliction of suffering on Bosniak and Croat civilians in the Luka camp and Brcko police station between May and June 1992.

Karan-Ilic was acquitted of charges that one time she participated in the sexual abuse of prisoners in the Luka camp and that she extinguished cigarettes on a prisoner’s body.

The indictment against Karan-Ilic – which consisted of eight counts – was filed by the Brcko District prosecution in March last year, and the first degree verdict was passed in May this year.

Karan-Ilic has been remanded in Bijeljina since December 2011, and the time spent in custody will be subtracted from her sentence.
