“I heard once that some soldiers wanted to be let in so they could kill the Ustashas. They were angry. They shouted that one of their men had been killed. ‘Penzija’ pulled his pistol out and shouted at them, telling them that they could not do it. He defended us, the prisoners,” said Jozo Kalfic.

He said that he knew the indictee under his nickname ‘Penzija’ and that he had a good opinion about him.

The witness said that they took him out for examinations twice.

“It happened in a semi-dark room. Two or three men were present. They asked some military questions. Whoever had a chance hit us on our backs with legs, hands, cables. I do not know those people, as they are not from Kakanj. The indictee never hit me. As far as I know, he did not hit anybody else,” Kalfic said.

Sehagic is charged, in his capacity as Manager of a detention facility in the old administrative building of the Brown Coal Mine in Kakanj, with having participated in the torture of Croat prisoners and failed to undertake the measures to prevent the torture and file reports against the perpetrators.

Witness Kalfic said that he could not see whether other men were beaten up, but he said that a beaten man was carried into the room, where prisoners were held, and that they carried him out on a blanket, most probably to a hospital.

“I once spoke to the indictee during lunch. I could not eat, so he asked me what was wrong. You know, I was held in detention, I was afraid, my wife had just delivered a baby. At that time I had six children. He then told me that there was nothing he could do, because they came from other places and did whatever they wanted,” Kalfic said.

The witness said that, following a visit by the Red Cross, detainees were allowed to receive visitors, that detainees were treated in a normal manner and that they began releasing people to liberty.

The examination of Prosecution’s witnesses was completed with Kalfic’s testimony.

The Defence announced that it would examine the indictee first at the beginning of presentation of its evidence.

The trial is due to continue on November 4.
