Witnesses Drago Djurkovic, Dragan Savcic, Milovan Djeric and Momir Bakmaz told the Basic Court in Eastern Sarajevo that they were members of the First Romanija Brigade and that indictee Markovic was a member of that Brigade too.
I know that he was here on the Sarajevo battlefield – or more precisely in Grbavica, in the Kovacici area near the Jewish cemetery. I used to see him. He transported food. I responsibly claim that he was present there. I used to see him every day. He drove us, Djurkovic said, adding that he was on the Sarajevo battlefield from May 1992 to May 1993.
The District Prosecution in Eastern Sarajevo charges Markovic, former member of a VRS unit in Han Pijesak, with having beaten up and physically abused detained civilians in Sokolac area from June 1992 to March 1993.
Dragan Savcic said that the indictee, whom he had known since childhood, was not inclined towards conflict.
I do not think he is a type of person inclined towards conflict. I can say that responsibly. I do not know of one single case where he mistreated somebody, Savcic said.
He too said that he used to see Markovic on the Sarajevo battlefield and that he was in the background, transporting food.
Milovan Djeric said that he had known the indictee for 30 years and that he was a driver with his unit in 1992 and 1993. Momir Bakmaz confirmed that the indictee transported food.
The trial is due to continue on December 6, when the indictee will testify in his defence.
