Ostoja Stanisic, the former commander of the Bosnian Serb Army’s Sixth Battalion, and Marko Milosevic, his deputy, are on trial for the mass killing of approximately 1000 Srebrenica civilians on a dam near Petkovci in mid-July 1995. According to the indictment, the prisoners were held in a new school building in Petkovci prior to being taken to the dam.
The evidence presented at today’s hearing by the defense didn’t directly refer to the Petkovci dam killings.
Petko Pavlovic, Milosevic’s defense attorney, presented documents issued by the Bosnian Army in June 1995. Pavlovic said the documents indicated that the 28th Division of the Bosnian Army was armed and attacked Serb villages in the Srebrenica area.
Pavlovic also presented a document issued by Republika Srpska police in May 1995, which indicated that the Bosnian Army violated a decision prohibiting flights above the protected zone of Srebrenica.
Milos Peric, Stanisic’s defense attorney, said no plan for the expulsion of the local population of Srebrenica existed.
Peric said following a meeting between Ratko Mladic, the former commander of the Bosnian Serb Army, and representatives of Srebrenica, buses were sent to to evacuate civilians in Bratunac on July 12, 1995.
The trial will continue on September 30.
