The verdict sentenced Vukovic for the inhumane treatment, physical abuse, and injury of civilians.
The trial chamber concluded that Vukovic ordered civilians to face a wall in the Army Hall in Nevesinje with their hands above their hands, and then abused them.
“The fact that there was no material evidence, which was something the defense highlighted, does not bring into question the testimonies of the victims. The prosecutor proved that international humanitarian law regulations were violated, in the sense that civilians were abused and that there is a connection between the crime and the conflict,” said Dusko Popic, the presiding judge.
Under the verdict, Vukovic was acquitted of charges that he arrested civilians and detained them in the Army Hall in Nevesinje.
When determining the length of sentence, the trial chamber viewed Vukovic’s poor financial situation, his good behaviour during the trial, and his lack of a criminal record as mitigating circumstances.
This verdict can appealed at the Supreme Court of Republika Srpska.
