Milisav Marjanovic, who said he has known Ivanovic since “he was born”, said that they participated in a futsal tournament in Skelani from June 28 to July 12. Futsal is like football but played on a smaller surface.
“We often met each other in Skelani. We used any opportunity to play futsal. Zeljko was a quiet and unobtrusive man and a labourious member of his family. He was always in a good mood at the football field. He was a good player,” Marjanovic said.
Ivanovic, a former member of the Skelani Third Unit with the Second Special Police Squad of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska, MUP RS, is charged with participating in the capture and shooting of more than 1,000 Srebrenica residents at the Kravica Agricultural Cooperative on July 12 and 13.
Prosecution witnesses have said the Second Special Police Squad was in the field in Srednje, near Sarajevo, at the end of June 1995 and returned to Srebrenica on July 11.
The second defence witness, Milan Rankic, said Ivanovic came from a good family and “was a quiet and shy guy”.
The next hearing will take place on September 2 when Milenko Trifunovic and Aleksandar Radovanovic will testify for the defence.
In October last year the two former members of the Second Squad were sentenced by a second instance verdict to 33 and 32 years in prison respectively for assisting in the commission of genocide.
