Prosecutor Cazim Hasanspahic said he repeatedly tried to get in touch with witnesses from Serbia, but failed to reach them. He said he’d received information that one witness had died, and was waiting for a confirmation from the Serbian prosecutor’s office.

“I contacted them in order to confirm and to eventually obtain a death certificate. The prosecutor’s office in Serbia informed me that they filed a request with the municipalities of Surcin and Nova Pazova to clarify this,” Hasanspahic said.

Vojic’s defense attorney said it wouldn’t begin presenting evidence until the state prosecution completed its evidence proceedings.

“The trial chamber understands that this is a matter regarding key witnesses. We will postpone the trial indefinitely, until we obtain information about this from the prosecutor,” presiding judge Zoran Bozic said.

Vojic and Mesic, former members of the 501st Brigade of the Fifth Corps of the Bosnian Army, have been charged with the repeated rape of a woman on May 1 or 2, 1994, and with forcing another person to sexually abuse her.

Due to the 60 day lapse since the last hearing, the trial formally began again. The prosecution and the defense agreed not to present evidence already included in the trial.
