As per an agreement with the court, Mahmutovic’s guilty plea foresees a sentence of one year in prison.

Mahmutovic, a former member of the Fifth Battalion of the military police of the Fifth Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was charged with the inhumane treatment of prisoners of war as they were being transported to an exchange location in March 1995.

Mahmutovic was allegedly accompanied by several other members of his unit, and the prisoners of war they transported were primarily members of the Army of Republika Srpska.

The prisoners were transported from Cazin towards the Izacic border crossing in the municipality of Bihac.

The cantonal court in Bihac has sentenced Safet Kovacevic to eighteen months in prison for the same crime. Former suspects Husein Begic, Muhamed Anadolac, Abid Ljubijankic, and Sabahudin Hafuric were acquitted of charges in relation to this case.

The court’s verdict will be handed down on February 23.
