Four former members of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina accused of committing crimes in Gorazde will face trial in the District Court of Eastern Sarajevo on February 26.

The District Prosecutor’s Office of East Sarajevo has charged former soldiers Muhamed Adzem, Omer Ugljesa, Senad Halilovic and Suljo Karkelja with participating in the murder of seven prisoners of war, all former members of the Army of Republika Srpska, in 1992.

During a pretrial hearing, District Prosecutor Tarik Crnkic said 42 witnesses would be examined, along with expert findings and 115 instances of material evidence. Crnkic added that the prosecution would need 15-20 working days to present its evidence.

Defense attorney Nikica Grzic agreed with the prosecution’s proposed method of presenting evidence. Grzic added that two out of the 42 witnesses mentioned were deceased.

Indictments were filed and swiftly confirmed against Adzem, Ugljesa, Halilovic and Krkelj in October of last year. The defendants are allowed to remain free as the trial commences, after having spent six months in custody.
