The district court in Eastern Sarajevo on Monday acquitted Dragisa and Milenko Cacic and Vojo Motika of charges that they and another unknown person murdered Midhat Dzananovic near the village of Starcici on August 8, 1992, wounded his 13-year-old son Meho and then tortured him the day afterwards.

The court found that there was no evidence to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.

“It was established that there was a war and Mihdat Dzananovic was killed. It is questionable who fired multiple shots killing Mihdat and wounding [his son] Meho. It was not established whether Mihdat Dzananovic was a fighter or a civilian,” said presiding judge Zenaida Husic.

Husic said that teenage Meho Dzananovic was the only eyewitness and that he had repeated several times that he did not see who fired the deadly shots.

Motika, who came to the court under the influence of alcohol, did not attend the sentencing hearing.

The verdict can be appealed before the supreme court in Bosnia’s Serb-led entity, Republika Srpska.
