Testifying before the District Court in Doboj, Lukic said that he heard that members of the Red Berets beat Ibrakovic up in the prison and that he was beaten as soon as being admitted to the prison.

“While I was locking the door after having taken him out of the room, Vojo Markovic slapped him in his face at the other end of the corridor. At that moment I somehow forcibly took him back to the room. This was the only situation I saw. I do not know why he accused me,” Lukic said.

Lukic also said that he was wounded in 1992, so he did not work in the prison in the period from August 1 to November 15 that year.

Lukic, former guard in the District Prison in Doboj, is charged with having beaten Saban Ibrakovic with his legs and hands, making him lose consciousness, in the corridor twice in the period from June 12 to mid-October 1992.

Lukic’s brother Djordjo Lukic testified in his defence at this hearing. He said that he used to see Ibrakovic in the District Prison, where he worked as a guard, in mid-1992.

“It is not known to me that anybody beat that man up,” Djordjo Lukic said, adding that his brother was wounded in late July 1992 and that he did not work in the prison “until November or December that year.”

Momir Gavric, former reserve policeman from Doboj, said that he saw Ibrakovic, whom he had known from before, because he used to work in his neighbourhood, in 1992, when he came to the police checkpoint in order to surrender.

“He was dressed in civil suit. I think he came in order to surrender. Most probably he had an official pistol, which he handed over. He did not want us to drive him to his people in Svjetlic, but he insisted on being taken to the Police Station,” Gavric said.

The trial is due to continue on December 23, when the Doboj District Prosecution and Defence will present their closing statements.
