At a status conference held before the Basic Court of Brcko District, the presiding judge Muhamed Avdic said that the first prosecution witnesses might be examined as early as mid-June.

The indictment, containing eight counts, charges Monika Karan Ilic, a Bosnian Serb civilian, with having participated in torture, inhumane treatment and with causing severe suffering to civilians in the Luka detention camp and the police station in Brcko from May to July 1992.

Former Luka camp detainees claim that Ilic was the girlfriend of Goran Jelisic known as Adolf, the camp commander, who was sentenced by the Hague Tribunal to 40 years in prison in 2001.

The Brcko District Prosecution filed the indictment against Ilic on March 1 and the court confirmed it four days later.

Ilic is the first woman to be indicted for war crimes by entity level courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Appearing before the court on April 12, Ilic pleaded not guilty. She has been held in a prison in Bijeljina since December last year.

A new hearing about extending custody is due to be held on May 18, 2012.
