Leaders of the Union of Donbas Volunteers, which has recruited paramilitary volunteers from the Balkans to fight for Moscow-backed separatist forces in eastern Ukraine, are hoping to run in alliance with the ruling party in upcoming parliamentary elections in Russia.

A prosecution expert witness told the trial of Jahja Vukovic, who is accused of joining terrorist military units in Syria, that being exposed to armed conflict as a minor affected his mental state.

Prosecution witnesses’ statements read out at the trial of alleged fighter Milarem Berbic claimed they saw him armed and wearing a uniform while he was in Syria, but that they thought he was not militarily active.

BIRN’s unique new database includes court verdicts handed down in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia for domestic terrorism and for going abroad to fight in the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.

Since hundreds of Balkan extremists went abroad to fight for Islamic State and other militant groups, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia have come under increased international pressure to clamp down on the financing of terrorism.

The state prosecution said it is expecting court documents to arrive from Turkey about Begzad Spahic, who is suspected of joining the so-called Islamic State, to see whether he has already been convicted of the same offence.

The Security Ministry of Bosnia and Herzegovina has started collecting information for its final report on the implementation of the Action Plan for the Strategy for Preventing and Countering Terrorism, which expired late last year.
