The third instance chamber at the Bosnian state court found Veselko Raguz not guilty of war crimes in Dretelj, near Capljina. The chamber, however, upheld a verdict sentencing Ivo Raguz to three years in prison for the same crimes.

The defense teams of Veselko and Ivo Raguz, found guilty of war crimes in Capljina, presented their appeals at the Bosnian state court. The defense teams said the verdict was unlawful and called upon the court to acquit their clients.

Two former members of the Croatian Defence Council, Veselko and Ivo Raguz, were sentenced to three years in jail each for abusing four prisoners at the Dretelj detention camp near Capljina in 1993.

The appellate chamber of the Bosnian state court will hand down its verdict against Veselko and Ivo Raguz on Wednesday, June 10. At todays hearing the defense teams concluded their closing statements and requested that the court acquit the two defendants of war crimes in Capljina and Stolac.

The retrial of Veselko and Ivo Raguz began with a reading of the indictment and the presentation of introductory statements by the state prosecution and the defense teams at the appellate chamber of the Bosnian state court. Veselko and Ivo Raguz have been accused of committing war crimes in the areas of Stolac and Capljina.

The Appellate Chamber of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared at a status conference that the testimonies of a certain number of witnesses from the first instance procedure would be heard again at the retrial of Veselko and Ivo Raguz. A new trial will begin on March 25.
