The Bosnian Army’s former commander in Srebrenica, Naser Oric, was acquitted on appeal at his retrial of killing three Serb prisoners of war in 1992. The state court in Sarajevo on Friday acquitted Naser Oric of killing three Serb prisoners of war in the Bratunac and Srebrenica areas of Bosnia during the war in 1992.

Appeals judges confirmed the acquittal of the former commander of the Bosnian Serb Interior Ministry’s special police brigade, Goran Saric, clearing him of involvement in the Srebrenica genocide in 1995. The appeals chamber of the Bosnian state court has rejected a prosecution appeal as unfounded and confirmed the verdict that found former special police brigade commander Goran Saric not guilty of involvement in the genocide of Bosniaks from Srebrenica in July 1995, BIRN has learned.

In closing arguments at the retrial of the Bosnian Army’s former commander in Srebrenica, Naser Oric, the defence said that he should be acquitted of killing three Serb prisoners of war in 1992. Naser Oric’s defence asked the state court in Sarajevo on Friday to acquit the former Bosnian Army commander, saying that the prosecution had not proved his guilt at the retrial.

Former Bosnian Serb battalion commander Ostoja Stanisic was sentenced to five years in prison for assisting the commission of genocide of Bosniaks from Srebrenica in July 1995. The appeals chamber of the Bosnian state court on Thursday upheld the conviction of Ostoja Stanisic, the former commander of the Sixth Battalion of the Bosnian Serb Army’s Zvornik Brigade, but reduced his sentence from 11 to five years.

A Bosnian Serb ex-soldier told a Belgrade court how he helped to conceal the bodies of several hundred Bosniaks from Srebrenica after a night-long mass execution in a hangar in the village of Kravica in 1995. Former Bosnian Serb soldier Zoran Eric told Belgrade Higher Court on Wednesday that he helped cover the bodies of 200 to 300 Srebrenica victims with hay after a night of mass shootings at an agricultural farm in Kravica in Bosnia in July 1995.

Naser Oric’s defence in his war crimes trial questioned the credibility of a witness who said he saw the Bosnian Army’s former commander in Srebrenica open fire on a Serb prisoner in 1992. The defence lawyer in Naser Oric’s trial at the Bosnian state court on Tuesday raised doubts about the testimony given by a witness who said he saw the Bosniak commander shoot a Serb prisoner.
