The defence of Sasa Cvetkovic called for a verdict of release, saying the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina had not proved the defendant’s responsibility for crimes in Sase and Bratunac beyond reasonable doubt.
The defence said the prosecution had not proved that the defendant was in Sase in the second half of May 1992, when the two Roma women were killed.
According to the defence, Cvetkovic returned to Sase from a deployment on June 8 or 9, 1992.
Defence lawyer Miodrag Stojanovic cited what he claimed were various other discrepancies and contradictions in prosecution witness testimonies, including differences between the testimony given by the women who said they were raped by Cvetkovic and testimony given by another woman who was with them at the time.
Cvetkovic told the court he had been willing to undergo a polygraph test together with one of his rape accusers since the start of the trial.
“If I fail the test, I am ready to serve a life sentence,” he said.
He also insisted that the town Roma woman were old and sick people to whom he did no harm.
The verdict will be handed down on March 22.
