Sarajevo-born Dzemil Hodzic uses his personal experience of searching for photographs of his brother, who was killed in the Bosnian war, to help preserve the memories of people who have lost their lives in contemporary conflict zones.

On the eve of the second anniversary of the full scale Russian invasion, Ukrainians are experiencing feelings that citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina have long been familiar with: the fear of new escalations and destabilisation, the search for justice and the complicating fact that many perpetrators are out of reach, and the feeling that the world has turned its attention elsewhere.

Serb nationalist and pro-Moscow groups from Bosnia, Serbia and Russia celebrated the controversial Day of Republika Srpska this week with fireworks, militaristic warnings and slogans glorifying war criminals.

In a series of indictments announced over the New Year period, 15 suspects were charged with various wartime crimes including attacks on villages that left dozens of Bosniaks and Croats dead and executing hundreds of men from Srebrenica.

The 11 suspects were charged with committing crimes against humanity in 1992 for their involvement in the unlawful detention and inhumane treatment of around 700 Bosniak men and boys, some of whom were killed.

At least six police officers are under investigation in Bosnia and Herzegovina for domestic violence, but internal cases against them have been suspended until the end of the criminal proceedings, Detektor has learned. In the past, police officers found responsible for domestic violence have been fined but not dismissed.

The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network of Bosnia and Herzegovina presented a multimedia research into Serbia’s role in the Bosnian war through international tribunal verdicts – with reference to the verdict against former Serbia State Security officials Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic.

Out of 39 media outlets covered by the Media Ownership Monitor Database, nearly 40 per cent of the most prominent media outlets in Bosnia and Herzegovina do not offer full transparency, a conference to present the Database organised by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network of Bosnia and Herzegovina, BIRN BiH, heard.

Haris Rovcanin won this year’s regional award in the ‘Contribution to the Community’ category for his work on the Database of Judicially Established Facts about the War in Bosnia.

Seven former Bosnian Serb Army officers and soldiers were charged with the capture and killing of 65 Bosniaks in the Sekovici and Vlasenica areas in July 1995 as the victims were fleeing Srebrenica.
