The prosecution on Thursday charged Vlado Stjepanovic, Zoran Tanasic, Zarko Milanovic, Mladen Krajisnik, Savo Mrsic, Milivoje Cobic and Milan Markovic with having persecuted the Bosniak population of Janja from April 1992 to September 1994.

According to the charges, they were police officers in Janja working under the authority of the Bosnian Serb interior ministry’s public security center in Bijeljina at the time.

The prosecution accuses Tanasic, Krajisnik, Mrsic and Milanovic of the beating and mental and physical torture of civilians brought to the police station in Janja and other locations. The prosecution alleges that they hit civilians with their fists and batons, and kicked them with their boots.

Cobic and Markovic are also charged with having beaten a Bosniak civilian who they hit with a rifle butt and kicked until he fainted. The civilian died due to consequences of the beating.

Tanasic and Stjepanovic are further charged with trying to kill a civilian by shooting at him with an automatic rifle.

The indictment has been filed to the state court of Bosnia and Herzegovina for confirmation.
