The Bosnian state court’s appeals chamber found Dzeko guilty on Thursday of taking part in the killings of six captured Croatian Defence Council fighters and two civilians – a married couple – on April 16, 1993.

Dzeko is a former member of the Zulfikar Unit of the Bosnian army.

The Bosnian court partially accepted the prosecution’s appeal against the first-instance verdict, which sentenced Dzeko to 12 years in prison for crimes against civilians and prisoners of war, and increased the jail term by one year.

The original verdict, handed down in June last year, also acquitted Dzeko of crimes in Jablanica in 1993, including arresting, abusing and looting the property of Bosnian Croat civilians and the murder of one more civilian in Konjic.

Dzeko was extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina from the US in 2011.

Thursday’s verdict cannot be appealed.
