Kameric, a former member of the 101st Bosanski Brod Brigade of the Croatian Defense Council (HVO), is charged with participating in the torture of Serb and Bosniak civilians and prisoners of war on police premises and at the Polet stadium in Bosanski Brod from April-October 1992.
State prosecutor Milorad Barasin requested that the court pronounce a prison sentence for Kameric, taking into account both the aggravating and mitigating circumstances of the case.
“During the main trial the prosecution presented evidence that the defendant undoubtedly committed the crime as described in the indictment. The court will render a fair decision on the basis of the presented evidence. I believe that Indira Kameric will be pronounced guilty under that decision,” Barasin said.
Barasin pointed out that the prosecution had proven that an armed conflict existed at the time of the crime, that the injured parties were civilians, and that the defendant was a member of the 101st Bosanski Brod Brigade of the HVO.
Barasin said that the prosecution had proven that Kameric was responsible for the physical and mental abuse of Marko Mitric. Mitric did not testify at this trial due to his poor health, but described his abuse in a statement he gave to investigative bodies in 1994.
Barasin said that the testimonies of Hazba Nukic and a protected witness known as IK3, proved that Kameric was the perpetrator of their physical, mental, and sexual abuse. He said that Nukic and IK3 had no reason to groundlessly accuse Kameric.
“Nukic said that she was handed over to 30-year old Indira, who read her an alleged indictment, indicating that she had conveyed information to Chetnik commanders. She confirmed that she actively participated in her sexual abuse and that she slapped her twice,” Barasin said. He also pointed out that Nukic was able to easily identify Kameric.
Barasin said that prosecution witnesses confirmed that Kameric and other HVO members participated in the physical abuse of Jovo Dujic at the Polet stadium. The witnesses had stated that Kameric hit Dujic all over his body with a metal rod and that she stomped on him in high heels.
According to Barasin, Dujic was taken away by unknown HVO soldiers. His remains were exhumed in 1993.
Barasin said that based on witness testimony, the prosecution had proven that Kameric had assisted in the rape of four women.
“We consider that the defense has not managed to depreciate the strength of the evidence. None of the defense witnesses offered a firm alibi. A mix-up of identities has not been proven, considering the fact that prosecution witnesses recognized her in the courtroom,” Barasin said.
The defense will present its closing statement on March 17.
