State Prosecutor Miroslav Janjic requested one-month custody for Milovanovic due to a danger that he might influence witnesses while at liberty.

“Custody is the only measure that can ensure an uninterrupted course of the proceedings,” Janjic said, pointing out that the Prosecution would complete the investigation in this case in less than a month.

Milovanovic, a former member of the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, is under a State Prosecution investigation due to a suspicion that he raped a Croat woman in Sase village, Srebrenica municipality, in May 1992.

The Prosecution alleges that Milovanovic committed the rape, while threatening the woman with a knife. After that he allegedly threatened the injured party by saying that he would kill her if she told anyone about what happened.

Rade Golic, Defence attorney of suspect Milovanovic, said that the State Prosecution’s allegations were generalised.

“The suspect is aware of the fact that, by influencing witnesses, he would make his position much more difficult,” Golic said, proposing to the Court to order prohibiting measures against Milovanovic.

The State Investigation and Protection Agency, SIPA, arrested Milovanovic on December 24.
