Research about Losses in the Bihac Area

This year the Association of Genocide Victims and Witnesses will implement a pilot project titled “Researching and determining material and human losses in Bihac municipality in the 1992-95 period.”
On that occasion the Association of Genocide Victims and Witnesses and Croatian Memorial and Documentation CentrE of the Homeland War from Croatia in Bihac signed a memorandum on expert collaboration on the project in Bihac.
“The aim of the project is to try to determine the total losses, including human victims and material damage, on the territory of Bihac municipality in the period from 1992 to 1995. The project activities undertaken since the beginning of the project six months ago indicate that the losses are enormous,” says Murat Tahirovic, President of the Association of Genocide Victims and Witnesses.
He said that the Croatian Memorial and Documentation Centre, which had received the documentation referring to this specific area, would provide support in the research.
Data about body injuries, types and consequences of crimes, displaced persons and refugees as well as wartime migrations of the population will be gathered during the implementation of this project.
Besides that, the project will research material losses, covering movable and immovable property belonging to the local population, public institutions, companies and infrastructure.
As of July 1 trained interviewers will visit all households on the territory of this municipality. Their job is expected to be completed in late September.
The collaboration between the Association of Genocide Victims and Croatian Documentation and Memorial Centre of the Homeland war will continue in September, when they will work on a project aimed at determining the human losses in Prijedor.
“We shall work together on Tomasica project, which will include a research of the grave crimes committed in Prijedor municipality. The Centre has more than 200 statements by Bosniaks and Croats who took refuge in Croatia after having been expelled from their homes in that period of time,” said Ante Nazor, Director of the Croatian Memorial and Documentation Centre.
