The Appeals Chamber of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has increased the prison sentence handed down against Alminko Islamovic to three years from 14 months for the inhumane treatment of Serb civilians and for depriving them of their property in the northern Bosanski Brod area during the 1992-95 war.
The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced it had partially upheld an appeal filed by the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, increasing the prison sentence and confirming the remaining part of the first instance verdict.
The Court rejected as unfounded a defense appeal for Islamovic to be acquitted or a retrial ordered.
Under the first instance verdict from April this year, Islamovic was sentenced to one year and two months for treating Serb civilians in the Bosanski Brod area in an inhumane manner and depriving them of property and acquitted of charges of killing a number of civilians, as well as mining and setting religious and cultural monuments and houses owned by Serbs on fire.
The latest verdict may not be appealed.
