Four years ago, when journalists asked about the 1.7 billion Bosnian marks [87 million euros] which a Russian owner paid to recapitalise the Optima Group company, the relevant institutions remained silent or had no comment on the payment. Recently, Detektor has been investigating where the money went, what the relevant institutions know about the payment, and whether Bosnia and Herzegovina is at risk of Western sanctions.
During our search, we spoke to people who lost their jobs at the Brod and Modrica refineries, which are reporting losses, and we checked up on the situation for locals who fear for their health because they’re surrounded by toxic waste.
