Every year on May 3, journalists worldwide celebrate World Press Freedom Day. That’s why this programme is about why domestic politicians are seeking to limit media freedom in Bosnia and Herzegovina more than ever, and how this affects journalists. For a year, journalists in Republika Srpska have been facing defamation investigations by prosecutors while reporting on topics of public interest. Numerous defamation lawsuits filed by politicians have now been replaced by investigations conducted by prosecutors using all the resources of the state. In the Federation, they are still safe from prosecutors, but there is an increasingly prevalent trend towards restricting journalists’ freedom to report. We’ve been speaking to journalists on World Press Freedom Day about the pressures and the threats, and how they affect their work and their families.
