Former Croatian Defence Council fighter Edin Sakoc was sentenced to seven years in prison for participating in the murder of two Serb civilians in Pocitelj in the Capljina municipality in 1992.
The Bosnian state court in Sarajevo on Friday convicted ex-fighter Edin Sakoc of involvement in the two Serb civilians’ murders in Pocitelj during wartime in 1992.
“The chamber has determined, beyond reasonable doubt, that Sakoc participated in the murder of the two civilians and that he committed the crime with premeditation,” said presiding judge Dzemila Begovic.
But the court acquitted Sakoc of raping a woman, saying that witness testimonies were not persuasive enough to convict him.
Begovic said the court had not found any aggravating circumstances but took into account as mitigating circumstances the fact that Sakoc has not been convicted before and that he has a family.
The verdict can be appealed.
Sakoc was extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina from the United States in February 2016 after being arrested by US police because he gave false information about his role in the Bosnian war to the authorities.
