Remains of Several Persons Found at Karacici Crime Scene

Radomir Markovic, Mile Kusic, Dragan Bozovic, Sasa Perkovic, Radomir Gluhovic, Pero Radovic, Ilija Vukasinovic and Milos Vukasinovic have been charged with searching and pillaging houses along in the villages of Karacici, Vragolovi and Golubovici on September 18, 1992. They allegedly acted in collaboration with several other unidentified persons.

According to the charges, the defendants found approximately 20 Bosniak civilians hiding in a garage in Karacici. They beat them using rifle butts, after which they allegedly pushed the civilians into a nearby building and killed them. The shooting caused a fire, which ultimately burned the victims’ bodies.

The indictment alleges that at the time Markovic was the commander of the Socicka Company of the Rogaticka Brigade of the Bosnian Serb Army, while the other defendants were members of that unit.

Testifying for the state prosecution, Enes Milavica said he inspected a crime scene in Karacici in 2000, while working as a crime inspector with the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Gorazde. He said he found the remains of several persons at the crime scene.

“We found the remains of one or two persons in a building…There was a barn, a hothouse or something like that across the street from the building. We found some remains there as well,” Milavica said. He said the remains had been burned.

The defense asked Milavica how far apart were the two buildings at the crime scene. Milavica said the distance was approximately ten meters.

He said bullet capsules and other objects were also found at the scene of the crime, and that the families of the victims were able to identify the remains based on the personal belongings found there.

“The identification was conducted there. Close family members were present. They recognized and identified their family members on the basis of the material evidence we found at the scene: pieces of fabric, belts, shoes, jewelry,” Milavica said.

In response to questions by the defense, Milavica said he couldn’t remember whether the bullet capsules were found inside or outside of the building.

A new state prosecution witness will be examined on May 12.
