The trial opened on Tuesday with a reading of the indictment and opening remarks by the prosecution.

The cantonal prosecution has charged Papic, a former battalion commander with the First Sarajevo Brigade of the Bosnian Serb Army, with abusing civilians and forcing them to perform forced labor between 1992-1994.

After reading the indictment, prosecutor Nives Kanevcev said she would prove the charges against Papic.

“We will hear testimonies from witnesses who saw the crimes, as well as witnesses who have other knowledge,” said Kanevcev.

Kanevcev also said a pathologist would present his findings about certain exhumed bodies and that several pieces of material evidence would be entered into the case file.

“At this time the Defense will not present opening remarks or propose evidence. We will only do this once the prosecution has finished with their case,” said Papic’s lawyer, Veljko Civsa.

The first prosecution witness will testify on March 31.
