Dedic testified in his own defence at the cantonal court in Zenica on Monday that he had no contact with any of the alleged victims listed in his indictment.
“I did not know them, except for Mica Subotic, who I used to see in the town because he was working for the electric utility company… I learned about Zdravko and Momcilo Subotic’s deaths at the prosecutor’s office and I was surprised,” Dedic said.
He added that he was in the police station in the central Bosnian town of Breza for a few minutes on June 10, 1992, and he then went to the nearby Vrankamen checkpoint with some other colleagues.
He said that they did not leave the checkpoint during their shift and that any other engagement that day would have been noted in their schedule.
“We never arrested policemen. The criminal service and military security were doing raids, and the military police and the manoeuvres [special forces] unit were [in charge] of security,” Dedic said.
Dedic is accused of having participated in the beating of Serb civilians during the collection of illegal weapons in June 1992.
Two people are alleged to have died as a result of the beatings, while three others suffered severe injuries.
The trial continues on September 24.
