Tolic was detained on Thursday at a border crossing near Srebrenica on suspicion of involvement in the rape, torture and abuse of several dozen Serb prisoners in Odzak and Bosanski Brod in northern Bosnia between May and October 1992.

The state prosecutor alleges that Tolic was a member of the 102nd Odzak Brigade of the Croatian Defence Council and a guard commander at several prison camps and detention centres.

“According to the evidence collected, victims were raped, abused and tortured in exceptionally humiliating ways, in which the suspect participated personally. From the consequences of the torture and abuse, a number of prisoners passed away,” said a statement issued by the prosecutor.

Bosnia’s state court has already sentenced one former Bosnian Croat fighter, Albina Terzic, to five years in prison for war crimes against Serbs in the town of Odzak in 1992.

Terzic was one of a handful women charged with war crimes in Bosnia.

According to the verdict, she beat prisoners, set a dog loose on them, and tortured, abused and molested them in other ways.
