In its opening statement at the cantonal court in Zenica on Monday, the prosecution said it would prove that Pravdic, a former member of the Croatian Defence Council, was guilty of killing the two Bosniak detainees.
The defence lawyer said however that “once the defence has presented its evidence, the court will come to a totally different conclusion”.
The indictment charges Pravdic with killing brothers Edin and Edib Fejzic on August 5, 1993.
It alleges that the brothers tried to escape from prison and were moved to a Croatian Defence Council kitchen in the village of Orahovica, near Zepce.
According to the charges, Pravdic killed the brothers there by shooting them at close range. He then turned towards other prisoners, but fellow Croatian Defence Council soldiers prevented him from shooting them too.
The trial is due to continue on June 11.
