Victims’ families and officials from the Sarajevo Canton will gather at the Sarajevo city marketplace on Sunday, August 28 this year in remembrance of 43 murdered civilians.
Sixteen years ago, on August 28, 1995 a grenade was fired at the Markale marketplace from positions which, several court verdicts have determined, were held by the Republika Srpska Army, VRS.
On that day 43 civilians were killed and 84 were injured.
The sixteenth anniversary of the murder at Markale marketplace will be marked by laying of flowers at the murder location in Sarajevo.
The Hague Tribunal sentenced Dragomir Milosevic, former Commander of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps of VRS, to 29 years in prison for crimes in the Sarajevo area, including the murder of civilians at Markale in August 1995.
The Hague Tribunal’s verdict against Milosevic says that he failed to prevent or punish those who committed the murders at Markale.
Radovan Karadzic, former President of Republika Srpska, RS, is on trial before the Hague Tribunal on charges including the shelling of Markale city market in February 1994 and August 1995.
Ratko Mladic, former Commander of the VRS’ Main Headquarters, is awaiting his trial before The Hague Tribunal to begin. Mladic will be tried for the shelling of Markale, among other things.
After being on the run for more than 15 years, Mladic was arrested on May 26 this year and transferred to The Hague Tribunal.
VRS forces shelled the Markale city market twice in the period from 1992 to 1995.
The first shelling incident happened on February 5, 1994, when a mine-thrower projectile was fired at Markale, killing 67 and wounding more than 140 people.
The following people were killed at Markale marketplace in Sarajevo on August 28, 1995: Omer Ajanovic, Hidajet Alic, Salko Alic, Zeno Basevic, Husein Baktasevic, Sevda Brkan-Kruscica, Vera Brutus-Djukic, Halida Cepic, Pasa Crncalo, Mejra Cocalic, Razija Colic, Esad Coranbegic, Dario Dlouhi, Salko Durakovic, Alija Dzevlan, Najla Fazlic, Rijad Garbo, Ibrahim Hajvaz, Meho Herceglic, Jasmina Hodzic, Hajrudin Hozo, Jusuf Hasimbegovic, Adnan Ibrahimagic, Ilija Karanovic, Mesudija Kerovic, Vehid Komar, Muhamed Kukic, Mirsad Kovacevic, Hasim Kurtovic, Ismet Klaric, Masija Loncar, Osman Mahmutovic, Senad Muratovic, Goran Poturkovic, Blazenka Smoljan, Hamid Smajlhodzic, Hajro Satrovic, Samir Topuzovic, Hamza Tunovic, Ajdin Vukotic, Sabaheta Vukotic, Meho Zeco and Narima Ziga.
