Serbian lawyer Jelena Nikolic told BIRN that Nikolic died while on a six month leave approved by the Hague Tribunal because of his poor health.
In January 2015, Nikolic was sentenced to 35 years in prison for assisting in the Srebrenica genocide, as well as crimes against humanity and the violation of the laws and customs of war.
He was found guilty of crimes in Srebrenica and Zepa in July 1995, when Bosnian Serb forces killed more than 7000 men and boys and expelled women, children and the elderly.
Vujadin Popovic, Ljubisa Beara, Vinko Pandurevic, Radivoje Miletic, Ljubomir Borovcanin and Milan Gvero were sentenced alongside Nikolic for war crimes in Srebrenica.
