Djurovic, a former member of the Army of Republika Srpska, is charged with the rape of a Bosniak woman during the Bosnian war. The rape allegedly took place in the Vraca neighbourhood of Sarajevo in 1992.
The indictment alleges that Djurovic committed the rape in an abandoned building. He threatened the victim by saying he would kill her and her child.
Cantonal prosecutor Aida Catovic said she would prove that Djurovic committed the crime in the manner described in the indictment.
Catovic said she would prove his guilt by examining witnesses, reading a statement given by the victim, and presenting material evidence. Catovic said court experts would present their findings on the victim’s health.
Gavrilo Gunjak, Djurovic’s defense attorney, said he would not present his introductory statement. He said he would present his proposed evidence list once the prosecution finished presenting its evidence.
The indictment against Djurovic was filed and confirmed on December 15, 2014.
Djurovic was brought to this hearing from the penal and correctional facility in Foca, where he is serving a prison sentence for another incident of rape. The sentence was handed down by the basic court in Sokolac.
The first prosecution witness will be examined on March 17.
