Bosnian prosecutor Dzevad Muratbegovic told the court in Sarajevo at the opening of the trial on Monday that he intended to prove that Kovacevic was involved in a widespread and systematic attack in the Visegrad area during wartime.
Former Bosnian Serb soldier Kovacevic is charged with participating in detentions, murders, rapes and the large-scale destruction of property from May until August 1992.
According to the indictment, Kovacevic murdered one civilian in the village of Dobrun in the municipality of Visegrad and raped two women in August 1992.
He is also accused of participating in the arrest of several people in the village of Zlatnik at the end of May in 1992. After their arrests, the detainees were killed by unknown assailants.
According to indictment, Kovacevic also participated in the burning of houses in Zlatnik, during which three civilians lost their lives.
But Kovacevic’s defence lawyer Petko Pavlovic said that prosecution evidence, were “shaky” and said that he was hoping for an acquittal.
The defendant has not been remanded in custody, but is not allowed to leave Visegrad and has to report to the police station.
The first prosecution witness will testify on October 20.
