Croatian media have said that Hrkac was released soon after his arrest with protective measures. The District court in Split and Croatian State prosecution could not confirm this, since their spokespersons were away.

The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced that the arrest was conducted as a result of co-operation with Croatian judiciary within the Protocol on cooperation in criminal prosecution of war-crime perpetrators.

Hrkac, former member of the Convicts Battalion with the Croatian Defence Council, HVO, is suspected of having beaten, abused and forced detained members of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ABiH, to perform hard labour and having killed one detainee. In addition, he is suspected of having beaten, tortured and abused several Bosniaks.

Hrkac, against whom the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina filed an indictment, has been hiding in Croatia for years.

“Only after the signing of the Protocol on co-operation and ceding of the Bosnian State Prosecution’s evidence to our colleagues in Croatia, was it possible for Croatian judicial bodies to undertake these activities,” the Prosecution announced.
