Alic is charged, as a member of Bosnia’s territorial defence military police during wartime, with involvement in holding unlawfully-detained civilians at Sarajevo’s central prison and at the former Viktor Bubanj military barracks in the city.

“The indictment alleges that in the period from July 1992 to late October 1992, the defendant took part in a joint criminal enterprise and participated in the intentional infliction of severe physical or mental pain or suffering against the unlawfully-detained Serb civilians, and inhumane treatment and coercing another by force or by threat of immediate attack upon his life or limb to sexual intercourse,” the indictment said.

The Bosnian prosecution previously said that Alic was currently not in the country, but refused to give further information this week.

Two other men, Ramiz Avdovic and Iulian-Nicolae Vintila, are already on trial for alleged crimes at the Sarajevo prison and the former Viktor Bubanj barracks.

They are accused of having participated, as members of a joint criminal enterprise, in the establishment and maintenance of a system for the abuse of Serb civilians at the prison and the barracks.

According to the charges, Avdovic was the commander of the guards on the fifth floor of the prison and at the barracks, while Vintila was a cook and guard at the barracks.

A fourth man, Besim Muderizovic, was also charged with these crimes, but died during his trial in December last year.
