The State Prosecution announced that the skeletal remains of 42 persons have been found at this locality, adding that it assumed that those remains belonged to residents of the “Jakes” institution for medical treatment, rehabilitation and social protection of chronic mental patients in Modrica.

The bodies will be transferred to a joint mortuary in Odzak, where forensic processing and the taking of DNA samples will be conducted. The victims’ identity will then be determined on the basis of DNA analysis.

The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed that the exhumation at Jakes-Staro Dzamiste would continue in the coming days, adding that more bodies were expected to be found.

The exhumation is led by a State Prosecution investigator. Officers of the Institute for the Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, INO of BiH, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska, representatives of the International Commission for the Missing Persons, ICMP, and a court medicine expert are taking part in the search for and exhumation of remains.
