Judges Meron and Agius will head The Hague Tribunal over the coming two years. They are due to take their duties over on November 17 this year. The Hague Tribunal is currently presided over by Patrick Robinson from Jamaica.

Meron has been working with the ICTY since 2001. He served as President of The Hague Tribunal in the period from 2003 to 2005.

Judge Meron from the United States of America is considered a leading expert in international and criminal and human rights law.

“As President of the ICTY, judge Meron spearheaded a series of reforms designed to increase the efficiency of court proceedings. During his term as President Meron was instrumental in helping to establish the War Crimes Chamber of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an important step in the development of the rule of law,” the ICTY announcement reads.

Carmel Agius from Malta has served as a judge with The Hague Tribunal since 2001. He has been involved in several cases processed before the ICTY. Agius has chaired the Rules Committee of the ICTY since 2003.
