Aleksic, who has worked on several cases held before the Hague Tribunal, agreed to represent Mladic when he makes his first appearance before judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, ICTY, in The Hague.

“Besides representing indictee Mladic when he makes his first appearance in court, Mr. Aleksic will represent him in other issues that may come up until a permanent defence attorney has been appointed for the indictee,” the Hague Tribunal’s decision says.

Mladic, former Commander of the Main Headquarters with the Republika Srpska Army, is due to makes his first appearance before the Hague Tribunal at a hearing scheduled for Friday, June 3.

The former Bosnian Serb military leader, who is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and violation of the laws and customs of war, was arrested in Serbia on May 26 after 16 years on the run. He was transferred to the Hague Tribunal’s Detention Unit on May 31 this year.

At Mladic’s initial appearance before judges, the indictment will be read to him and he will be asked to enter a plea. If he refuses to do so, the Tribunal will schedule a new plea hearing within the next 30 days.
