Post-war returnees to Prijedor have a growing feeling of fear and insecurity because of the glorification of war criminals and an increase in revisionism about the wartime past, as well as right-wing organisations denying crimes. All that combined with the bad political and economic situation further complicates the life of Bosniak and Croat returnees. On top of that, a monument to the children killed in Prijedor has never been constructed, which slows down the process of facing the past as it’s one of the pillars of transitional justice and reconciliation. Returnees are losing hope, so they are moving out of Prijedor again, leaving reconstructed houses empty. The departure of young people is particularly worrying.
