Maric, a former member of the Seventh Battalion of the Croatian Defence Council’s Military Police in Vitez, is under an investigation for allegedly committing war crimes against captured civilians and Bosnian Army soldiers.

He is suspected of contravening the Geneva Conventions’ provisions on the protection of civilians and prisoners of war in Vares in October 1993.

“The suspect has been charged with deliberately causing severe physical pain and suffering to prisoners of war and Bosniak civilians who were detained at the Croatian Defence Council Military Police premises in Vares,” the state prosecution said in a statement.
