“The injured party S-1 convincingly and consistently described the traumatic situation in which she found herself, as well as the things that happened to her,” said presiding judge Halil Lagumdzija.
Lagumdzija said the court took into account as mitigating circumstances the fact that Ikonic has a family, but the fact that he he committed several rapes was taken into account as aggravating circumstances.
“The chamber looked at the fact that the sexual assault was totally unwarranted and against the will of the victim, and that Ikonic was aware of its consequences,” said the judge.
Meanwhile the state court acquitted former Bosnian Serb Army serviceman Zoran Ilic of the same crime.
Ilic was cleared of raping another woman who unidentified persons had brought to an apartment in Rogatica in June 1992.
The court said the identity of the perpetrator has remained the subject of dispute and the prosecution failed to prove that Ilic committed the crime.
The verdict can be appealed.
