Protected Witness Describes Radisic as his Former Protector

A protected defense witness testified at the trial of Pero Radisic, a former Bosnian Serb fighter charged with crimes in the Teslic area. The witness said Pero Radisic used to take him to the frontlines to perform his civil duties and acted as his protector.

The witness, known as S2, lived in the municipality of Teslic during the war and was engaged in civil duties. He said his local community hired him in 1992, and he went to different villages to perform his tasks. He said in 1993, he was called to the Partizan handball stadium.

“We gathered at that location and then went to wherever we were needed. We used to go to the frontlines in order to repair trenches and build dugouts. I met Radisic during the war. He used to take us from Teslic to the frontlines. He was with us. He gave us orders on what to do. If there were any problems, he protected us. Pero was our security guard, our protector,” S2 said.

S1 said he hadn’t heard that anyone was mistreated, or that Radisic had mistreated anyone.

He said he heard about the charges of mistreatment for the first time when the defendant invited him to testify.

Pero Radisic has been charged with participating in the physical and mental abuse of Bosniak civilians as the commander of a work squad with the Teslicka Brigade of the Bosnian Serb Army (VRS) from 1992 to 1995.

He has been charged with taking several persons to locations where they performed forced labour. At least six individuals were killed and a number were wounded while working on the frontlines.

The trial will continue on February 19.
